What You Need to Know About Healthy Hearts

There are four topics in Healthy Hearts that promote cardiovascular health:

- About the Heart – Cardiovascular Function
- Movin’ & Groovin’ – Physical Activity
- Eatin’ Right – Nutrition
- Bye Bye Tobacco – Tobacco

Healthy Hearts has been designed for 5th and 6th grade teachers to implement in their classes with the following goals in mind:

  • Requires minimal computer experience for teachers. To use Healthy Hearts, you should:
    • Use Email
    • Use the Internet
    • Have access to a computer that is connected to the Internet
    • Have a printer
    • Have an up-to-date Web browser (Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 4.7)
  • Provides interdisciplinary instruction - Healthy Hearts integrates content standards in:
    • Math
    • Language Arts (Writing, Reading)
    • Technology
    • Health
    • Physical Education
  • Requires minimal amount of teacher time
    • Primarily self-contained instruction for kids
    • Flexible scheduling – Use as often as schedule permits
    • Intuitive use
    • Support via e-mail
  • Requires no teacher training/health teaching experience
    • Self contained instruction for kids
    • Instruction is individually paced for kids
    • Teachers have access to all information
  • Easily incorporates student assessment
    • Teacher assesses student written work
    • Built in multiple choice quizzes
    • Kids monitor their own progress
  • Is enjoyable for students
    • Appealing computer-based (web-based) instruction
    • Colorful and well designed graphics supporting content and learning
    • Interactive activities throughout instruction
    • Self-paced
    • Individualized based on student performance
    • Motivating rewards to encourage children to participate
